"Coming 2 America"

Much has come out of this pandemic. Most of it bad, but there have been some highlights like movies coming into our homes a lot sooner than expected. One in particular that fans of Eddie Murphy have been asking for years for is a sequel to his 1988 hit film "Coming to America" where he plays Prince Akeem Joffer from the fictional country Zamunda who goes to the city of Queens in the hopes of finding a wife to love instead of an arranged marriage. Now we get to go back to Zamunda where Akeem finds himself in an all new adventure over thirty years in the making.

Now married for thirty years Prince Akeem and his loving wife Lisa (Shari Headley) live in the palace in Zamunda with their three daughters Meeka (Kiki Layne), Omma (Bella Murphy) and Tinashe (Akiley Love) who strive to be kind and fair leaders to the kingdom and deal with diplomacy with the neighboring kingdom Nexdoria and its General Izzi (Wesley Snipes). Yet when Akeem is summoned by his dying father King Jaffe (James Earl Jones) along with his friend and right hand man Semmi (Arsenio Hall) he learns that the shaman Baba (also played by Arsenio Hall) that he had a vision of an illegitimate son that Akeem had conceived during their journey to Queens to which Akeem has no memory of occurring. Yet with the help of Semmi filling in the blanks to a blackout night that occurred, Akeem realizes that he must journey back to America in order to find his son since Zamunda law dictates that a male must take the throne.
Tracking down his son through some old friends from the local barber shop (roles played by Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall) they locate Akeem's son Lavelle Junson (Jermaine Fowler) and his mother Mary (Leslie Jones) who verifies the one-night stand, they are whisked off to Zamunda where Lavelle must prepare to take on his role as prince or be at risk of  a war with Nexdoria while adjusting to his newfound and surprised extended family.

As far as sequels go, it's tough to meet the expectations that the first one left. This was one that was worth its weight in gold. From the reprisal of favorite characters including the ones played by Murphy and Hall to a strong cast of talented black actors and performers this film did all it could to be a royal legacy. Along with demonstrating the importance of family and finding your own way, the film touched on not fitting in that stereotypical mold put on the social culture of absent fathers and race that are still prominent in our society yet rarely seeing the exceptions that strive to break it. With its comical style and heartwarming moments keeping up with the original, its a film to treasure more than any riches with it five shining G.M.Stars that will be its crowning glory.
