"Antebellum"

Hello movie lovers out there. It's been a long time since I've done a post. Like so many people out there I've been going through my challenges because of the isolation and restrictions of Covid-19 mainly with my eldest son who has ASD and didn't care for being kept at home. Now that things are beginning to find a calm, I decided it was time to get back to one of the things I love and have missed, writing. Now without further to do, I'd like to get to one of the latest films released that has been the talk of many horror fans have been on edge to see, Antebellum.

Opening up to what appears to be an oppressive cotton plantation set in the south in the time of the Civil war, Eden (Janelle Monae) has been captured after trying to escape from her captors where slaves are not allowed to speak without permission and is beaten by the general only known as "Him" (Eric Lange) while her fellow escapees a man known as Eli (Tongayi Chirisa) is beaten and his wife is killed in front of him. Run by Captain Jasper (Jack Huston) who gets off abusing them and his wife and daughter to "Him" Elizabeth (Jena Malone) who selects and names the new arrivals like Julia (Kiersey Clemons) the slaves live in fear of when they will be beaten, raped and possibly murdered each day.

Switching over to modern times, Eden or rather Veronica Henley is a successful Ph D. and author speaking out about the oppression of women and black people in modern times as well as a wife and mother to husband Nick and daughter Kennedi (Marque Richardson and London Boyce). On a trip to a seminar to promote her book, Veronica has a lot of strange encounters leading up to an event where the stories intertwine and where one's worst nightmare becomes Veronica's reality.

Terrifying and hair-raising. While many movies resort to bringing to life monsters, demons and things that go bump in the night sometimes the greatest evils and fears lie within the hearts of man and what we're capable of. The horrors of the past being relived in the here and now can bring enough fear to make a grown man cry or for a couple of talented directors and writers an eye and mind-opening sensation that speaks volumes beyond just a simple thriller. With subtle, but consistant symbolism of the butterfly most likely representing our souls and how they change and bring hope with each life, a talented cast including that of the dramatic performance of Janelle Monae and the sinister villain projected from Jack Huston along with the mood sensation music and camera work, it all came together to tell this story and deliver its message if we don't learn from the past, we will be doomed to repeat the mistakes in the future. Yet there is no mistake that this film deserves the highest ranking of five G.M.Stars with a bonus skull for being both terrifying and mind-blowing.
