"The Night Clerk"

People who live with Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD has been on the rise in the last decade. It ranges from person to person from those who rarely speak to those who are super observant and could be classified as being a genius. One thing many share is the difficulty to be social with other people causing them anxiety and not being able to relate to others. Many find ways to deal with their difficulties, such as observation, yet one must be careful, otherwise they may see something someone might kill for.

Bart Bromely (Tye Sheridan) is the night clerk for a hotel. Living with autism has made it a challenge to talk with other people, but his job allows him to be alone most nights which gives him time to do practice being in social situations with people. One method he's found to do this is to observe people from hidden cameras in their rooms watching from his laptop. Yet he gets more than he bargained for one night when after his shift one night he observes a woman being murdered and puts himself at the scene making him the prime suspect to police detective Johnny Espada (John Leguizamo).

Even being transferred to another hotel doesn't help Bart from being on Espada's radar, but it allows him to meet the beautiful Andrea Rivera (Ana de Armas) who seems to have a soft spot for Bart and allows him to have a human connection outside from his mother Ethel (Helen Hunt). Though as they closer, Bart begins to learn there's more to Andrea mysterious background and that it may be making her the killer's next target.

Definitely a film to check out. While there are times that it feels a little slow, once the storyline takes off it keeps you intrigued. A refreshing take with the main character being an average joe with ASD trying to function in world that is often at time strange and overwhelming to many. The suspense plays out well and adds an unsuspecting twist that is worth watching. As a mom with two boys who have ASD, it makes me glad to have films like these portraying characters like them and hopefully with more to come as I leave this film with four G.M.Stars.
