"Polaroid" (2019)
Such a thing as taking a picture seems like a harmless thing, yet not everyone feels that way. Some cultures believe taking a photo of someone can steal a piece of their soul while others think it preserves a moment in time to be looked back on and remembered. Yet when it becomes the object of supernatural forces to lash out on the living, a picture can be worth more than a thousand words, it can be worth your life.
Bird Fitcher (Kathryn Prescott) is a quiet high schooler with a passion for photography and when she is fortunate to be given an old rare polaroid camera from the '70's by Tyler (Davi Santos), her friend and co-worker at the antique shop she works at she is more than eager to try it out on people like Tyler and at a costume party hosted by her friend Avery (Katie Stevens) and her friends Kasey (Samantha Logan) Devin (Keenan Tracey) Mina (Priscilla Quintana) and her crush Connor (Tyler Young).
Yet when she learns Tyler and Avery died in what looked like tragic accidents, Bird suspects that there is more to it when she sees a mysterious shadowy figure that seems to move from picture to picture and now is darkening the group photograph with her friends in it. The group soon realizes their is an evil force behind the lens of that camera that will stop at nothing until each of their lives are taken. It will be a photo finish to stop the entity before they become nothing more than faces in a picture.
It's not the first time someone has done a camera that causes death or disaster in a story. R.L.Stine did it in his classic Goosebumps novel "Say Cheese and Die" as well as other writers. Yet while the idea is not the most original the set up and plot twist made this film a fairly good watch. The gore factor was mild for a horror movie, but it makes up its lack of shock value with the suspense and fresh faced cast including a short appearance by "Riverdale" actor Madelaine Petsch in the beginning scene that sets the stage for the events to come. While the avid horror fan might pass this over, the suspense thriller who loves a well-plotted out mystery should enjoy this and would feel that four G.M.Stars is a fair rating.
