"The Addams Family" (2019)

Well, I promised an answer to those on MoVTie Critic's Facebook page and here it is. I watched "The Addams Family" at the Sunset Drive-In this past weekend, along with "Abominable" and despite the cool fall temperatures it was worth getting to see two movies in one evening. Unfortunately I don't have time to review both in this post. My schedule is demanding while working at the Vermont Teddy Bear factory for a little extra cash for the upcoming holidays and I appreciate everyone's patience with my posting. Anyway, let's get to the good stuff.

In this take on America's favorite creepy and unusual family, we are taken back to where Gomez (Oscar Isaac) and Morticia (Charlize Theron) begin their journey together by becoming husband and wife only to have their nuptials interrupted by a mob of angry villagers that run them and their family out of their homeland. Desiring a place to call their own that suits them, they go to the one place they feel fits their lifestyle, New Jersey.
Over the next thirteen years, they live a life of darkness and peace with only each other and their children Wednesday (Chloe Grace Mortez) and Pugsley (Finn Wolfhard) and their butler Lurch (Conrad Vernon) to keep each other company with the exception of the occasional relative dropping in like Uncle Fester (Nick Kroll) or Grandmama (Bette Midler). But when a television home designer named Margaux Needler (Allison Janney) builds an idealistic little town called Assimilation which drains the marsh and reveals the world beyond the mansion on the hill to the Addams family, they will soon find themselves venturing beyond the mansion gates and getting a bright and shiny culture shock. While some of the Addams clan is curious to explore this new world, it leaves others to dismay including Margaux who sees them as a threat. It will be a family affair when it all comes to a head and will show that strange is relative.

I have seen many takes on this iconic family from the live action movies to the original television series starring John Astin as well the cartoon and reboot and have found that this film has stayed true to that legacy with its animation inspired by the original illustrations done by creator Charles Addams to the out there lifestyle they're well known from Gomez and Morticia's hot and heavy relationship to Lurch's tickling the ivories with each transition of the film. Charlize Theron captures the personality of Morticia with her confident yet morbid view of the world and Chloe Grace Mortez gives Wednesday the quiet, but cunning and curious take making her a character not to ignore. This is sure to become a Halloween favorite each year and a fan favorite for those who wish they could be a member of the Addams Family as Thing crawls away with five G.M.Stars.
