"Descendants 3"

With every fairy tale, there must be an ending. Usually a happily ever after, but before that the hero must triumph through challenges, face peril and prove good is stronger than evil. The Descendants Series has not been the typical fairy tale with the children of classic Disney villains finding they can be good and that sometimes all you need is a chance and the third and final chapter is no different.

To catch you up if your not familiar with the series, four VK's (villain's kids) were given the chance to come off the Isle of the Lost where all villains and their minions were banished 20 years ago to come to the kingdom of Auradon where the future king Ben (Mitchell Hope) son of Belle and the former Beast and brings over, Jay (Booboo Stewart) son of Jafar, Evie (Sophia Carson) daughter of The Evil Queen, Carlos (Cameron Boyce) son of Cruella De Vil and Mal (Dove Cameron) daughter of Maleficant.

Fast forward to the third installment where Mal and Ben have been successfully dating since triumphing over Maleficant and keeping her evil plan from happening and facing Uma (China Anne McClain) daughter of Ursula and nemesis to Mal along with Uma's band of pirates with Harry (Thomas Doherty) son of Captain Hook and Gil (Dylan Playfair) son of Gaston. Yet despite Uma being still on the loose since their encounter, Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos are about to take the next step of Ben's plan and allow more VK's to come to Auradon.
With four new candidates picked including Dizzy (Anna Cathcat) daughter of Drizella Tremaine and granddaughter of The Wicked Stepmother and Celia (Jadah Marie) daughter of Dr. Facilier, two things occur upon picking them up, Ben proposes to Mal and Hades (Cheyenne Jackson) tries to escape from the Isle upon their departure.
With the risk of more evil escaping the barrier, Mal and Ben are faced with the choice that they will have to close the barrier forever, but before anything is set in stone, a scorned Audrey (Sarah Jeffery) daughter of Sleeping Beauty and Ben's former girlfriend who was none too happy with the engagement and how Mal had used magic before to break them up originally. In her rage, she breaks into the museum housing all the fabled items of heroes and villains and steals the Queen's crown of Auradon and Maleficant's scepter.
Faced with a new threat, Mal and the others must seek the only thing more powerful that the scepter, Hades's Ember. With them ember in hand and the unlikely and shaky alliance of Uma, Harry and Gil, the crew must face their greatest challenge where there is everything to lose and with the journey comes shocking revelations and a decision that will change the future for hero and villain alike.

At times it's easy to dismiss a direct to television movie especially with one from Disney full of song and dance and over the top storytelling at times. Yet with Descendants it has been a journey not simply with new and familiar characters with wild colorful wardrobes who can carry a tune while stepping in time, but the emotional growth that you follow and see how far their character has come. Kenny Ortega who is responsible for the choreographing and directing and known for other classics like "Hocus Pocus" has clearly not lost his touch and bringing amazing loveable characters to life.
While this movie is not in short supply of theatrical numbers it also brings the story full circle where you find heart and closure as you get to see these characters ride off into the sunset. Along with a touching tribute being played during its premiere to the late Cameron Boyce who tragically passed away at age 20 from epileptic related death and how he will be deeply missed by his co-stars and fans alike. With such a piece full of heart and charm, no less than five G.M.Stars will do.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Descendants 3" is currently only playing on the Disney Channel.

This post is dedicated in the memory of Cameron Boyce who I watched since his first big film "Mirrors", his lovable character Luke on "Jessie", the quirky son of Adam Sandler in "Grown Ups" and "Grown Ups 2" and the VK with a soft spot for animals in "The Descendants Trilogy" may your star shine brightly in the heavens forever.
