"Scooby Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost"

For those of you old enough (or just major Scooby Doo fans) of the brief spin-off series in 1985 in which Shaggy who wore a red shirt, Daphne who seemed to lose her fashion sense with her new hair style and dressed like a mechanic and of course Scooby Doo with his loveable fearless nephew Scrappy and little hustler Flim Flam were given the responsibility of tracking down thirteen ghost that they accidently released from a chest. Guided by the master of horrors Vincent Van Ghoul (obviously modeled after famous horror film star Vincent Price) they had to track and trap the demons back in, but the series ended before they could capture them all leaving the thirteen one still out there. Now they have decided to pick up where they left off and the rest of the gang is along for the ride.

When the outcome of a case goes wrong for the gang, the local sheriff (David Herman) decides that Mystery Inc.'s days are over and forces them into retirement. While cleaning out all their old items for a yard sale, they come across an old crystal ball from which they receive a distressful message from Vincent Van Ghoul (Maurice LaMarche) telling that the thirteenth ghost Asmodeus (Nolan North) has returned and has set his sights on getting the chest and releasing the other ghost.
Telling the gang of their summer adventure with Van Ghoul, Daphne (Grey Griffin), Scooby (Frank Welker) and Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) assume leadership over this case leaving Fred (also voiced by Frank Welker) unsure of his role in the gang and Velma (Kate Micucci) questioning everything she knows as a rational thinker and if there really is such a thing as ghost.
Traveling to track down Vincent and the whereabouts of the chest that has been misplaced by Shaggy and the U.S. Mail, Asmodeus will stop at nothing to keep the group from finding the chest first as the journey test the group and makes them question if their group can survive.

A blast of the past for fans of old and a new generation. While it pleased me to see them take a page out of the classics and in a way bring closure to the unfinished series, it didn't deliver as much of a punch as I thought it would. It was refreshing though to see the characters go through some personal struggle and growth that we hadn't seen before in other films rather than playing the same traits over and over again like in many of their other films. Overall I would say this wasn't their best but far from their worst in their ever growing direct to dvd franchise. So while they won't get anywhere close to thirteen or in my case five G.M.Stars, I feel this film deserves three G.M.Stars for its step outside the ghostly box and not forgetting the past in which they came from.
