"Happy Death Day 2 U"

Normally I don't do post so close together, but with my recent hiatus, I feel I need to make up for lost time. Along with a new made for television movie, I got to view the much anticipated comedy/horror sequel that will have you going back again and again to the first one to keep track of anything you might have missed.

Before I get into the plot of this sequel, I want to quickly recap for those who are unfortunate not to have seen the first one. Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe), a sorority girl with a bit of a mean streak wakes up on Monday the 18th which also happens to be her birthday in this guy Carter Davis's (Israel Broussard) dorm room after a night of partying and you see her go through the events of her day, all leading up to her being brutally murdered by someone in a black hoodie wearing the school's mascot baby mask (don't ask why the mascot is a baby, it just is) only to find herself immediately waking up back in Carter's dorm room reliving the day over and over again. In order to find her killer and break this time loop, Tree must repeatedly be murdered over and over again to go through her long list of suspects until she finds out who's trying to kill her.

Now that we're all caught up, here comes the next chapter. This time, we focus in first on Carter's roommate Ryan Phan (Phi Vu) who was always showing up and putting his foot in his mouth at the start of Tree's day and learn the events of the 19th of how he and his friends Samar Ghosh (Suraj Sharma) and Andrea "Dre" Morgan (Sarah Yarkin) who are Quantum Physics majors are about to get their project known as "SISSY" shutdown by Dean Roger Bronson (Steve Zissis) after getting a major breakthrough. As if it wasn't bad enough, someone in a baby mask stabs him and he wakes up back in his car where his day began.
Getting Carter and Tree involved, it doesn't take them long to figure out what's been going on and they go to investigate. In the process, Ryan activates SISSY, who is intended to be an invention to control the speed of time, but instead sends a pulse-wave out sending Tree back to Monday the 18th in a newly made time loop. At first she tries to end it like she did before (no spoilers on the killer's identity for those just joining the franchise) but finds things are not the same as they were before. It soon becomes clear to the group that Tree is not in the same existence that she knows and that she's been shifted to an alternate reality of her life and that there is a new killer to find and that they are all vulnerable to being knocked off. Once again Tree must go through the cycles of dying not only to find a way home, but to save those closest to her, or their death will be permanent.

A hell of a riot. While most sequels don't come close to their original, this one came about as close as you could get without having to go back to the beginning. This provides answers that the previous film left out and explores quantum theory while delivering a dose of comedy with just enough thrill and suspense to keep you hooked along with a few surprises that you might leave you wanting to rewind and see again. Jessica Rothe's character continues to be a delight and makes death shocking and humorous. All in all, they will not need to redo anything to get five G.M.Stars from me.
