"The Little Vampire" (2017)

Many of us remember the 2000 live-action version about a boy who becomes friends with a vampire and helps to save his family from a vampire hunter. It was considered a success, especially with young actor Johnathan Lipnicki, a famous child actor at the time in one of the leading roles. Now while he's all grown up (and buff and good looking despite nasty rumors of him getting ugly once hitting puberty) the story itself still excites us and it should come as no surprise that someone else wanted to do a retelling using computer animation and making it 3D for a new generation.

In this version, we find Rudolph Sackville-Bagg (Rasmus Hardiker) gathering to celebrate his 13th birthday for the 300th time at their family crypt with relatives flying in from all over Europe. As the party is about to get underway, Rudolph and his brother Gregory (also played by Ramus Hardiker) attract the unwanted attention of vampire hunter Rookery (Jim Carter who also played Rookery in the live-action version). With the family entombed in the crypt and most of his family barely escaping, Rudolph leads Rookery on a wild goose chase to give his family a chance to escape.
Meanwhile, young American boy and vampire enthusiast Tony Thompson (Amy Saville) is on vacation with his parents staying at an old castle when the two worlds collide when Rudolph narrowly escapes the rising sun by flying into Tony's window. While the meeting is rocky, the two soon realize they are not as different as they think and find a bond of friendship. While Rookery is relentless in his pursuit of ridding the world of the vampires, Rudolph and Tony must join forces and bring their families together to save Rudolph's family and mend the rift between two worlds.

A sweet retelling with its own interpretation. While it didn't deliver the same spark as the original, it has its charm that will enchant you and your family while delivering the lesson of how not to judge someone too quickly. The computer animation delivered on portraying this new version of the story while bringing in some of the original actors to lend their voices to the characters they once portrayed. A tribute to the original while giving an original spin earns this film 4 G.M.Stars and is guaranteed not to suck.
