"Roman J. Israel, ESQ."

In this world today, we are well familiar with the good and the bad that comes from it and how much hypocrisy plays into it, letting good people suffer more than they deserve and not being just to those who've done wrong. Yet every now and again, there is someone who defies this and tries to make a change, but they are still human and face the same temptations that can make good men go bad.

Roman J. Israel (Denzel Washington) plays an idealistic lawyer who up until three weeks ago worked behind the scenes as a partner in a law firm, but when his partner suffers a heart attack that puts him in a vegetative state, he must step up his game and enter the court system where he sees a flawed system in need of someone that fights for those who need it rather than playing it safe and giving in to a system that is quick to punish.
During that time, he is recruited by George Pierce (Colin Farrell) an ambitious lawyer willing to give Roman a chance to execute his ideas by bringing him into his law firm and meets Maya Alston (Carmen Ejogo) a law professor who becomes intrigued and infatuated with Roman and his philosophy of law and life. Yet when faced with the temptation to use the law system to his advantage for a better life, he must determine if his values are worth keeping or if he will turn his back on them completely.

This was by far a riveting drama that dared to point out the flaws in our system and say, "No, we will not stand for this." A film that society has been waiting for. Denzel once again has delivered a stellar performance of a character that is outspoken, yet flawed and adding the dynamic of Colin Farrell to play off him made it unforgettable. A five G.M.Star performance that will have you captivated until the final moments.
