Reviewing "The Elf"

No, this is not a sequel to Will Ferrell's holiday classic, and while it's no longer the holidays, I thought after seeing this it was worth a mention.

This film follows a man named Nick and his fiancé Victoria on Christmas Eve looking through an old toy store that Nick inherited. While searching in the back, he comes across a trunk with a creepy looking red and green elf with a knife in its hand next to an old "naughty list" written on a piece of cloth and is suddenly having snow fall on him indoors and a strange symbol branded onto his wrist.
Having the elf suddenly vanish, he dismisses it as one of his "episodes" because of an incident that happened as a child at Christmastime, which has given him a great dislike for the holiday, but Victoria loves the holiday and wants to have a future with him, so she surprises him with her family and just as a snow storm is moving in, that's when the terror begins.
One by one, the evil elf starts to pick them off and the names start to cross off the list and it becomes a fight for survival where only one will be spared from the elf's list. All leading up to a plot twist you won't see coming.
My first impression of this was that it was going to be another cheesy small budget horror flick with what seemed to be a one camera production that wasn't always steady and the elf was very puppet-like and not Chucky in the Child's Play movies. However, this storyline had mysterious back stories, moments that made you wonder what was going to go down and a moment that will leave you going "Did not see that one coming".
So while it lacked special effects and better camera shots, it's fair to say that it stands out amongst small budget horror films. Having said that, I've decided to give it four G.M.Stars. So the next time you're looking for a non-traditional holiday film, you might want to consider putting this one in that loved one's stocking.
