Friend Request

Well, here's my first review. I just got done watching this one so the images are still pretty vivid. Let's start off by saying if you're into horror/thrillers like me, even the bad ones then this might be worth a watch. It takes place on a college campus, the typical setting for many horror movies where Laura (Alycia Debnam-Carey) is your pretty but not full of herself popular girl. She's got good friends, a med-student boyfriend and lots of social media post and pics of her living her wonderful life. It starts off with her and her friends attending one of her lectures and the professor announcing that a fellow classmate named Marina or Ma Rina on social media (Leisl Ahlers) has committed suicide leaving the room silent and Laura guilt-ridden. Why? Because flashing back to two weeks before you learn of how she accepted a friend request from the quiet, loner, pulling hair out of her own head Ma Rina. At first all seems well and that she's a unique interesting girl until Laura begins to experience nightmares with frightening images relating to Ma Rina and her graphic post, leading to obsession, rejection  and killing herself while posting the video online.
Just when things seem as though they'll go back to normal, the video shows up on Laura's homepage and no matter how many times she hits delete or tries to get rid of her account, it refuses to let go. One by one, friends start deserting her and those closest to her are being killed off in one horrific manner after another and it's a race against the clock to find the answers, or be Ma Rina's friend, forever and ever.

As far plots go, it was your standard shock and gore. A girl with a mysterious background that grows darker by the second, low on the make up and special effects using mostly unfocused camera tricks to make it look like something out of The Ring and low on the make you jump out of your skin surprises, however a few shining points that I took away from it is how loyal the boyfriend was through it all (no spoilers, gonna have to watch until the end to understand that one) and the ever strong moral of the dangers of online social media. Most of us have heard it since high school, don't friend or I.M. those you don't know. This just took that theory and took it to the supernatural extreme.

Now as far as my rating system, anyone can do ordinary stars. I'm going to use what I like to call G.M.Stars which stands for Green Mountain Stars. Not that original I know, but it goes with the theme. Since this wasn't the cheesiest horror film I've seen lately, I'm going to be fair and give it three G.M.Stars. It's a good watch for that girls sleep over with cheesy horror movies or just something to get that one person who is scared of any kind of horror movie to keep from hogging the popcorn bowl. Just be sure after you're done watching you delete those random friend request you've got pending. It may just save your life.
