Big Game

Many know Samuel L. Jackson started his career with small roles such as the armed robber in "Coming to America" until working his way up to the big roles such as "Pulp Fiction", "Snakes on a Plane" and his recent role with Ryan Reynolds "The Hitman's Bodyguard", but I'll bet many didn't hear about the Finnish-Britain film "Big Game"

The story starts of with soon to be 13 year old Oskari, (Onni Tommia) a Finnish boy preparing to go out into the wilderness armed only with a bow and arrow and a four wheeler with some basic supplies for a right of passage that if completed will make him be seen in the eyes of the village men that came before him as a man. Meanwhile, Air Force One is flying overhead to Helsinki on business when they suddenly find themselves under attack. Forced to abandon the plane in an escape pod, President William Alan Wallace (Samuel L. Jackson) is found by Oskari and must go with him on his hunt if he hopes to survive.
However, they soon find treachery and terror when they discover that his own bodyguard Morris (Ray Stevenson) and a hired gun freelance terrorist Hazar (Mehmet Kurtulus) are close behind and are willing to go to the extreme to make an example out of the leader of the free world. It soon becomes a race for survival as the Vice President (Victor Garber) and other staff members can only watch as it all transpires in a nail-biting adventure.

When I first saw this, I had to ask myself, "Why didn't this get better advertising in the U.S.?" We have one of the biggest names along side other well know actors such as Ted Levine (Monk, Evolution) and Jim Broadbent (Paddington, Paddington 2) and I have to find this at redbox just to hear about it. If this had been done in the United States, there's a good chance it would have made it to theaters. Honestly, they did this film wrong by not giving it at least a 20 second preview. The storyline was well written, the characters had depth and emotion and the few special effects gave it just the right amount of excitement and danger element. There's no question in my mind that this film rightfully deserves my highest rating of five G.M.Stars. A right on target film that hit its mark.
